- Broke into the top 3 after winning
Philadelphia.
- In July, won the first clay court title
in Kitzbuhel
- In the USO, defeated Courier in the
semi-finals but lost to Edberg in 4 sets.
Pete considers this loss a turning point,
"Up to that point, getting to the
finals was a good result for me. But when
I lost that match...I came to the
realization that getting to the finals
wouldn't be good enough anymore." [post-match
interview]
- Played in Davis Cup US – Switzerland
finals doubles in Texas partnering with
John McEnroe. Trailing two sets to none,
Mcenroe-Sampras took the last three sets
and then US won the final.
- On October 5, overtook Edberg for 2nd
place in the ranking
