1988

  • Reached the SF at Schenectady and QF in Detroit
  • At Indian Wells, his second professional tournament, defeated 37th ranked Ramesh Krishan and 25th ranked (10th seed) Eliot Teltscher in first and second rounds respectively. After these victories decided to drop out of high school and turn professional.
  • In his U.S. Open and Grand Slam debut, he lost to Jamie Yzaga 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the first round.
  • Spent a week practicing with Lendl at Lendl's Greenwich, Conn., home during last year's Nabisco Masters in New York. ''It was interesting to see his diet and how Ivan prepared each day during a big event,'' Sampras said. ''He was telling me what to do and I realized what you had to do to be No. 1.''
  • Ended the year ranked 97.

1989

  • Upset defending champion Mats Wilander in Round 16 of US Open : his first victory against a top 10 player.
  • Reached QF in Adelaide and Indianapolis
  • Teamed up with Courier for the doubles and won the Italian Open
  • Finished the year ranked 81
