Grand Slam No. 14:
US Open, 2002
"This
one might take the cake. This might be my biggest achievement
so far, to come through a very, very tough time and to win
the Open."
- Pete Sampras, upon winning the US Open
2002, his 14th Grand Slam title.
In his 6-3,
6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory over long-time rival Andre Agassi, Pete
Sampras extended his own record to 14 Grand Slam titles. He has
raised the US Open's championship trophy five times, matching
Jimmy Connors' open-era record. At 31, Pete has also become the
event's oldest winner since Ken Rosewall who won it at 35 in 1970,
and the oldest winner of any Slam since the man after whom the
stadium in which he won it is named, Arthur Ashe, won Wimbledon
in 1975 a month short of his 32nd birthday.
